Education for a Democratic Society

Lectures and Workshops with Yaacov Hecht, Director of the Institute for Democratic Education in Tel Aviv, Israel

Yaacov Hecht is Director of the Institute for Democratic Education (IDE) and a world leader in developing progressive and participative classrooms and schools. Mr. Hecht founded the first democratic school in Israel in 1987. As founder and director of IDE, he has helped start 25 democratic schools in Israel and supports over 150 traditional schools become more democratic. IDE also works with businesses and politicians, and coordinates an important program for peace education in Israel.

Educators, parents, students and others are invited to attend and consider the creation of learning environments that recognize the uniqueness of each student.

Opening Lecture
Date: Friday, January 9: 7:30pm
Focus: Pluralistic Learning: an approach that acknowledges the equal right of all individuals to express their unique qualities and to develop and achieve their full potential.
This talk will describe a new way of looking at human beings and the process of education.

Transforming our Learning Environments & Empowering our Lives
Workshops
Dates: Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10 and 11: 9:30am ­ 4:00pm
Focus: How to create new learning environments that help students take responsibility for their learning and their society.
This two-day workshop will clarify the ideas of pluralistic learning presented in the Friday lecture by involving attendees in a personal look at how to incorporate this learning in our lives and in the practice of schools and classrooms. This workshop, presented around the world, is supported by many years of experience and research in democratic and progressive education.

The Third Wave: Present, Vision and Mission
Lecture
Date: Saturday, January 10: 7.30pm
Focus: What is happening today in the field of progressive/democratic education throughout the world.
This talk will also consider future directions for progressive/innovative education, and will discuss what we can do today.

Cost:
Single lecture: $25 (students $10)
Both lectures: $45 (students $18)
All events: $150 (students $50

Proceeds are tax-deductible and benefit a program involving several U.S. educators who will work with IDE in Israel.
